Keywarden is a shareware - this means, that you can extensively test the software with all its features over the uniquely long time period of full six months - for free. If you like to use the program longer than the test period, you are required to buy a license.

All versions support both the languages English and German. All versions are fully compatible with each other, offer exactly the same feature set and use the same format for the license file. They only differ with respect to the installation procedure and the launching method.

Keywarden installation program for Windows

For Windows, use the comfortable Keywarden installation program. It copies the Keywarden files automatically to your system and creates program symbols and start menu entries, just with pressing a button. This usually is the best choice.

Keywarden-ZIP for Windows (for experienced Users)

This archive offers an easy-to-use oppertunity to update an existing installation of Keywarden. Another use is that it allows you to copy the files and to setup program symbols and links yourself. In one of these cases you may want to use the Keywarden-ZIP archive for Windows. It does not contain an installation program, but the launcher program keywarden.exe.

Keywarden-ZIP for other operating systems (Mac OS, Linux, Solaris, ...)

For all other operating systems than windows, use the generic Keywarden-ZIP archive. It only contains the core components of Keywarden. Installation and start of Keywarden differ from one operating system to the other. In favorable cases, a double click onto the Keywarden program file keywarden.jar is sufficient. In most cases, it should be possible to launch Keywarden via the command line with the command

java -jar keywarden.jar

This requires that Java is installed and registered in the search path for programs. If problems occur, use the command java -Dfransson.debug=true -jar keywarden.jar for diagnostic messages. Java

In order to run Keywarden you also need Java, which you can obtain for free from Sun Microsystems. The Java version needed by Keywarden is the Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) Runtime (JRE) departing from version 1.4 or higher. Keywarden has been tested thoroughly with J2SE 5.0.

As long as you do not have Java already installed, you need the following Java downloads in order to run Keywarden:

Strong Encryption

In order to use the full key length of 448 bit (called "unlimited" by Sun) allowed by the Blowfish encryption, Keywarden also needs the Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files. The reason for this is that, because of US export restrictions, the Java standard installation only allows a weak encryption with at most 56 bit (misleadingly called "strong" by Sun). The version of the JCE files must match the Java version.
